Leon John Hudecki was born in Hamilton in 1913 and in a life span of only 63 years, left his mark both on the bowling industry and the overall community. Leon owned Central Lanes in Hamilton and, as a prime mover for the formation of the Bowling Proprietors Association of Ontario, he was the natural choice as its first president. The BPAO also awarded Leon a life membership and named him to the YBC board of governors, a post he held until his death in 1976. While Leon set the pace with his administrative ability, he also had an eye for talent. He hired another of tonight’s inductees, Carl Malcolmson, and together they promoted tournament play and organized a youth program under the Canadian Junior Bowling Congress, the forerunner of the YBC. Bowling was only a small part of Leon’s community involvement. A dominant sportsman, Leon was the Hamilton city badminton champ in his younger years and was also a member of the Hamilton Tiger Cat football team that played in the 1935 Grey Cup. Leon used his football contacts to invite the likes of Tiger Cat representative Jim Trimble to his bowling centre Christmas parties. Moreover, in the community, Leon was an elected Separate School Trustee, a member of the Hamilton Recreation Committee, a Grand Knight of the Knights of Columbus and, for 22 years, a member of the Board of Governors of the Catholic Separate Schools of Hamilton. Leon’s life was one of helping out. In a material sense, he offered his bowling centre to the poor, the blind and the handicapped, but in the real sense, he gave himself to his fellow man and thus earned induction into the 5 Pin Bowling Hall of Fame tonight.
