The bowling grandmother, Edna Rimmer won the Canadian Open singles Championship at the age of 58. Bowling in Niagara Falls, Edna defeated Shirley Miller of Calgary by 300 pins in 10 games to claim the crown. Edna was a perennial star on the lanes, including her triumphant year in Niagara Falls. Edna appeared in the Carling O’Keefe provincial championship six times. In the Master Bowlers’ Association, Edna won eight tournaments, a figure equalled by Sue Wise and only surpassed by teammate Helen MacCallum and Hall of Famer Millie Evans. She was MBA Bowler of the Year in 1966-67 and joined that year from the men’s division by Scarborough’s Maw Mori. Born in 1911, Edna married Lorne Feaver in 1930. The marriage produced three children, Bill, Lorne and Lorraine, but ended sadly with her husband’s death in the Second World War in 1945. Looking for new challenges, Edna took to the lanes and her skills improved quickly. Taught by Hall of Famer Vera Ward, Edna became part of the Hamilton bowling scene that included Vera, fellow inductee tonight Ev Wood, and Shirley Bedell. By 1954 she was a member of the Hamilton ladies team that won the Ontario title, only to lose the Canadian championship to Calgary. Also in 1948, Edna married Jack Rimmer, and they enjoyed 30 years together. Today the three children, Bill in St. Catharines, and Lorne and Lorraine in Hamilton, have seven children and six grandchildren, and they fondly remember Edna and her bowling accomplishments.
