A native of Woodstock, Ken Rohrer has a part of the bowling scene in western Ontario for over forty five years. A natural athlete, Ken began his bowling career as a pinboy at The Recreation Centre in Woodstock and joined their industrial league at the young age of twelve.
While self taught, Ken does credit some of his expertise to Percy West, another of Woodstock's top bowlers and an individual who once bowled an 1126 triple at the year end tournament of the Canadian Bowling Association.
By fifteen, Ken, along with his brothers Bud and Bob, was bowling in the well known Inter City League on Saturdays, a league that encompassed the top bowlers from London to Guelph as it bowled home and home matches throughout the area.
From his Woodstock base, Ken has left his mark on five pin bowling across Ontario and at the Wyndham Lanes, participated in one of bowling's first youth events and finished second to Lou Hubert of Waterloo. By 1955, Ken bowled the first of his two perfect games at The Recreation Centre and followed that effort with a second 450 game at Dickson Bowl in Galt in 1960.
That same year, 1960, Ken qualified through his zone to bowl in the Canadian Championships and the mens team from Ontario took home gold medals in Calgary with a victory over the western representatives from Thunder Bay.
Ken made his mark on television and qualified for the CBC television series from O'Connor Bowl on three different occasions. Eventually, Ken lost to Si Rizun of Toronto, an individual who was undefeated on the series for many weeks. Another star of television series was André Morrissette of Quebec.
Morrissette also dominated the O'Connor lanes and efforts were made to showcase Morrissette across Ontario. In February of 1965, Ken won a ten game qualifying round at Fleetway 40 and the following day, defeated Morrisette 1372 - 1218 before 1500 screaming fans at the Fleetway Centre.
In 1964, Ken became a charter member of the Master Bowlers' Association and bowled for 11 years. In 1965, he won the Cataract Open in Niagara Falls to record his only MBA victory. The provincial open was also another area for Ken to display his talents. He currently has qualified nineteen times and look to the 199596 season for his twentieth appearance.
Over the years, Ken has won numerous high average titles and, in 1968, swept everything with averages of 262 in the Inter City league and 264 and 369 in two major leagues in Woodstock.
While Ken has been able to showcase his bowling abilities, there has always been a strong supporting cast. For over fifty years, the Rohrer family has been represented in the Industrial League in Woodstock. In fact, for several years, the family entered an entire family. Along with his late father Bill and brothers Bud and Bob, team members also included Ken's sister Bette Morrison and his niece, Sue Wanklin.
While working as an assembler at Fisher Controls for 35 years, Ken has chosen to remain single. Retirement is only a few years away and Ken is eagerly looking forward to continuing his bowling endeavours and also working even harder on his golf game.
