Winning the first tournament that he entered hooked Bill Korz on 5 pin bowling and, as they say, the rest is history. Like so many top bowlers of his era, Bill learned the sport as a pinboy at the Queen’s Centre. In 1961, as an alternate, he qualified for the 15-18 age group in a local tournament at the Winter Gardens, a popular bowling centre for the elite bowlers in Hamilton, and was victorious.

In the sixties, Bill established a reputation in the Hamilton and Niagara area as a fearless competitor. He established the Queen’s All-Stars, a group of young bowlers ready to compete in the all events tournaments that were so popular in locations such as Kitchener/Waterloo, Oshawa, Peterborough and Scarborough. Included with Bill were Vince Valvasori, Albert Delagroce, Bill Chapple and Neil Gallant.

Bill was a house councilor and tournament director at Queen’s when the Hamilton Bowlers’ Association began in 1963 and, overall, won numerous local association tournaments. Bill also bowled in the Niagara area, and, while representing Orchard Lanes in Grimsby, he won the singles title in the Niagara District Major League.

In the Ontario Open, which has become the most prestigious tournament in 5 pin bowling in this province, Bill has qualified twenty-five times and only three other male bowlers, Hall of Famers, Al Snow, Ian Cameron and Walter Heeney, have exceeded that total since the bowlers took over the championships in 1965. Bill has represented Hamilton, York Simcoe, 1000 Lakes and Grey Bruce and, in addition his twenty-five appearances have included twenty-four on the men’s team and only one on the mixed team.

Bill was a member of the 1972 men’s team from Hamilton and that team competed nationally in Saskatoon. In 1985, representing Grey Bruce, Bill won the Ontario singles title and traveled to St. John’s, Newfoundland to contest for the Canadian title. Moreover, that victory qualified Bill for the CBC television series and that appearance earned $1,000. In 1994, Bill led the Open qualifying round with a ten game score of 3077 to lead the field by a large 229 pins and this accomplishment came nearly twenty-five years after his first Open experience. However, in this case, Bill lost the provincial championship to Shawn McGhie of Kingston representing the Bay of Quinte Zone in the stepladder final.

While Bill excelled at the Ontario Open, a busy work schedule curtailed his weekend participation in the Master Bowlers Association. However, Bill did manage to bowl for thirteen years, but only three in the tournament division. He made the most of the effort and won two tournaments and made two national teams. His tournament victories were at the prestigious year-end event, in the tournament division in 1974 and the teaching division in 1978 and, in this year, Bill won Bowler of the Year honours in the teaching division as well.

These two wins also propelled Bill to two national teams. The 1974 tournament men’s team won gold in 1974 in St. Catharines and the 1978 teaching team won a silver medal in Calgary. Overall, Bill was placed in thirty-fourth place of the Top 90 male bowlers of all-time in Ontario.

Bill’s vocation as a carpenter and the on-going search for work has relocated Bill from Hamilton to Fenelon Falls and now Owen Sound. However, along the way, Bill has not neglected to add to the growth of 5 pin bowling regardless of where he is located. Throughout his career, he has coached in the Youth Bowling Council, including five years at Queen’s Centre and Sportsmans Bowl and with later stints in both Fenelon Falls and Owen Sound.

In Stoney Creek, Bill qualified for the local television cable show which was produced by Hall of Famer, Bob Coulter. Currently, Bill produces his own monthly television show, "Let’s Go Bowling", through the cable outlet in Meaford. Moreover, in 1975, Bill contributed his expertise to the formation of the 1000 Lakes zone and, in further recognition of his efforts to advance the sport of 5 pin bowling, through bowling excellence, the Grey Bruce Zone presented Bill with the first Tim McQuitty Memorial Award.

A father of four children, Bill has settled in Owen Sound with his life partner, Dorothy, and yearns for a return to the MBAO tournament trail, a possibility that may happen in the near future.
