When the Scarborough zone was producing the great teams in the early sixties, George Smith was not only part of them, he was one of their leaders. Born on Hallowe’en in 1925 in Toronto, George was a full Chippewa Indian, spending his school days in Toronto and his summers on the Reservation at Roseneath near Rick Lake. After the War, George worked for Bomac, and, in the highly competitive printing league, he hones his skills. A competitor in that league was Jim Hoult, winner of the first O’Connor Open in 1957, and with Jimmy, George hit the tournament trail. With the start of the Master Bowlers’ Association in 1964, George smith was the dominant player. In that first year, George didn’t win a tournament but his constant play earned him the first Master Bowler of the Year award. He ultimately won his first Masters event in 1967, and proceeded to become the first bowler to win five MBA events and the large diamond for his MBA ring. George also toured with Hellewells All Stars, and in 1965 he rolled a perfect game at Westside Bowl in Owen Sound. On CBC television, George had more than 30 appearances during the life of the show and rolled a high television single of 415. In 1962, George was a member of the Toronto East mixed team that won the Canadian championship in Saskatoon. In the Carling’s roll-offs, George qualified 13 times in Scarborough during a 17-yhear span from 196-82. He also coached at the provincial level and in 1969, took the Scarborough ladies team to the provincial title. George bowled with the best and beat the best and tonight we welcome him to the 5 Pin Bowling Hall of Fame.
