Helen (Terryberry) Richards loved tournaments. As early as 1957, she propelled herself on the national scene when Helen and fellow inductee tonight, Dot Peppin, anchored the Toronto ladies team to a national championship in Edmonton. Their 10 game score of 11,582 was nearly 500 pins better than the legendary Baldy Baldwin’s girls from Edmonton. Again in 1959, Helen reached the nationals finals, but this time as a single. In the qualifying rounds here in Ontario, Helen won the national singles spot with a mere five pin victory over Chatham’s Ruth Grant. At the nationals, this time at Deluxe Lanes in Vancouver, Helen rolled a 2710 10-game score to win the title. Her high score not only won by over 400 pins, but also was the highest score ever bowled, male or female, at the old East-West championships. As a two-time national champion, Helen was a natural for the Double Diamond Advisory staff. This group of top bowlers represented Double Diamond at bowling centre openings, offering instruction clinics and bowling exhibitions. Helen was partnered with Jim Hoult, the 1957 O’Connor Champion. Helen also starred in the CBA events, winning the singles title in 1958 as well as the aggregate titles in both 1958 and 1959. Married in 1959, Helen left the game as her children arrived but as they have grown up, she returned to the game in the last four years and each time, has qualified for the Carling’s provincial championship. Maybe a third national championship still lies on the horizon. Watching this second career are Helen’s children Leslie, Tim and Andrew, along with three grandchildren, and with them we congratulate Helen on her achievements and induction here tonight.
