John Scholes enters the 5 pin bowling Hall of Fame following a career that reached 50 years on the lanes. Born in the small town of Bolton near Manchester in England, John arrived in Canada in 1925 at age five. By 17, he set pins and started his bowling career at Millers Lanes in Welland, which is still in operation today. At Millers, John rolled a perfect game in 1941, which was not only the first in Welland but had to be one of the first dozen rolled in organized bowling. He repeated his perfect game feat 21 years later, rolling the first 450 game ever at Cataract Lanes in Niagara Falls. In 1984, John rolled a 448 game at Sherwood Centre in Hamilton to barely miss another perfect game 20 years later. John excelled in the competition of his day. In the fifties, he was the Niagara representative in the provincial championships and, since the switch to the Carling O’Keefe banner, John has represented Niagara 13 times, including seven times in the singles. In open events, John won the Cataract Open in Niagara Falls in 1962, the O’Connor Open in 1966 and appeared four times on CBC television. John was a charter master bowler and with his wife June, contributed to the growth of the Youth Bowling council in the Niagara area with headquarters at Bowl-O-Rama Lanes in Welland. Both John and June are proud of their family – daughters Jackie and Judy, son John, grandchildren Jim, David and Michael and with them, we congratulate John on his remarkable bowling accomplishments and induction to the 5 Pin Hall of Fame.
