- Legend
Myrt Rowell enjoyed a bowling career that spanned over 40 years. As early as 1938, at only 31, Myrt joined with Charles Lawson to win the Canadian Bowlers Association doubles championship. Their combined score was 1787, with Myrt contributing 1013 triple to that total. Myrt would duplicate this feat 14 years later, only this time his brother Fred was his partner. During the 1940s, Myrt was a member of the Vitone team from Hamilton, captained by the great Jimmy Morris, that won the Major League title in the Steel City 12 times in 14 seasons. Myrt rolled a perfect game on September 22, 1949 as a member of Mercury Mills team at the Ottawa Alleys in Hamilton, and he continued his top scoring with two 1000 plus triples in 1951. With the beginning of the East-West championships in 1953, Myrt was a member of national championship teams in both 1954 and 1956. The 1954 team defeated Winnipeg, while in 1956, the victims were Saskatoon. Only Myrt and Ab Collingwood were members of both teams. Myrt’s championship bowling continued through to his passing in 1980. In 1964, at Albion Bowl, he rolled a 10-game score of 3117, only to finish in a tie for third place behind Fed Hale – also being inducted here tonight as a builder – who that day rolled the highest 10-game score ever with 3246. A man who enjoyed bowling and all sports throughout his life, Myrt is remembered tonight by his wife Florence, his daughter Barbara, and four grandchildren as a true legend of five pin bowling.
