The Kitchener-Waterloo zone was originally formed in 1964. While Orv Bauman was in Florida when the first meeting was held, he was elected president anyway. Orv was an ideal candidate as he was retired, somewhat prosperous, and he had a keen interest in the game. In the early days, the Kitchener-Waterloo zone extended to Goderich and Owen Sound and Orv travelled throughout the zone. His interests were in lane certification and membership and, while fulfilling these functions, Orv’s travels generated interest in organized bowling. The formation of the Kitchener-Waterloo zone in 1964 corresponded to the first year that the bowlers conducted the provincial championships, as we know them today. The bowlers wanted their first provincial event in Kitchener, but switched to Guelph when the Canadian finals were also awarded to Kitchener. Orv used these national championships to showcase his organizing abilities. Along with Bob Totzke and Don Walker, he obtained four lanes from Brunswick and they were installed in the annex of the Kitchener-Waterloo Auditorium. Bowled in the early spring, the rink was unheated and gas heaters were placed along the lanes to warm up the bowlers. As the zone grew, Orv trained several newcomers to take over, one of the most notable being Walter Valentan. In his day, Orv was an excellent bowler and highlighted his career with a perfect game in 1961. As well as qualifying for the Carling’s provincials 5 times, Orv also volunteered his time to both the blind bowlers and senior citizens as both an instructor and coach. Orv was also an MBA tournament master and following his untimely death in 1975, the Master Bowlers’ Association approached his wife, Adele, to honour his memory with a trophy which is presented annually to the top male teaching master bowler of the year. While we miss his generosity, enthusiasm and love for life, tonight we recognize his inspiration as a builder of our sport and induct Orv Bauman to the Hall of Fame.
