Rolly Glandfield owes a lot to five pin bowling or as he says, "it started his whole life".

Returning to Toronto in 1931 at only 18, an unemployed Rolly Glandfield was offered the job of organizing the leagues at the St. Clair Alleys for "Doc" Dunlop. While accomplishing this task, Rolly earned extra money sitting as the foul line judge for two leagues and then bowling sweeps.

Bowling thirty or forty games per day, Rolly quickly became one of the top bowlers of the day. In 1936, his team from the St. Clair Recreation club won the Canadian Bowling Association (CBA) league championship competition. This team also won league championships in 1939 and 1940, and Rolly’s teammates included Tom Mallon.

With five pin bowling’s resurgence following World War II, Rolly continued to be a star of the City Major League, bowling on various teams including Central, Calverts, and the Danforth Braodview. In 1948, Rolly rolled a 1020 triple at the CBA annual tournament, just short of the record score at the time. While Rolly was starring on the lanes, he was also a success in his personal life. Through a meeting with Bill Alexander at the St. Clair Alleys, Rolly entered the brokerage business. He eventually owned a seat on the stock exchange with Glandfield and Company and remained active till 1975. In 1940, Rolly married Dottie, who also became a fine bowler. Of their three children, Jim remains very involved with five pin bowling, while daughters Pam and Susan live in Vancouver and Thunder Bay respectively.

From his prominent positions both on the stock exchange and as a top bowler, Rolly was a member of the committee promoting Sunday sports for Toronto. Along with Hall of Famer Mabel McDowell, they talked to all the league bowlers to persuade them to vote "yes" in the referendum.

Ill health forced Rolly to retire from bowling in the fifties, and today both Rolly and Dottie live in retirement at their home in Willowdale.
