Growing up in a bowling family, Sandy Lyons was destined to be a talented player. Both her parents, Audrey and Paul Shanahan, are in the 5 Pin Bowling Hall of Fame for their accomplishments on the lanes.
As a youngster, Sandy bowled in the Youth Bowling Council at Albion Bowl and Ace Bowl in Toronto and ultimately at the Queensway Bowl in Etobicoke. At each location, her mother was there, on the sidelines, offering instruction as needed. Sandy would win several high average titles and, as a top athlete, she excelled in both volleyball and baseball.
By the age of sixteen, Sandy was bowling in the elite Tuesday Mixed Major League at Olympia Edward and she won the high average title in 1978, the last year of operation for the large centre, which was located in downtown Toronto.
Looking to the adult ranks, Sandy finished second in the bursary tournament conducted by the Master Bowlers' Association. Despite missing this prize, Sandy joined the Masters in 1979 and, overall, won six tournaments starting with the Oktoberfest in 1980 and ending with the New Year's Classic in 2001. These six wins are noteworthy as this era was a time of the largest registration in the tournament division. With her victories, she shared the podium with Hall of Famers, Nick Pagniello and Matt Dragun, as well as Dave Johnson in 1980, Dale Strutt in 1995, Jason Procher in 1997 and a young Shawn Schedler in 2001.
As well, Sandy bowled on television through the Masters three times at the annual Rose Festival finishing first in 1982, third in 1984 and second two years later. As well, Sandy, along with another of tonight's honorees, Geoff Stevens, won the provincial aggregate title in 1992-1993 and, representing Ontario, finished fourth in Sudbury. Sandy's strength and preference was team play and she qualified three consecutive years, 1997-1999, for the Masters nationals and won gold each time. As an added bonus, Sandy won the Mark Ten accuracy contest on three occasions. Overall, in 1346 games, in the Master Bowlers' Association, tournament division, she averaged 244.25.
In the provincial Open, conducted by the Ontario 5 Pin Bowlers' Association, Sandy qualified twenty-five times, including six as the singles representative, eighteen times on the ladies team and, on seven occasions, the mixed team. Sandy won Ontario titles with the mixed team from York West in 1980, another mixed group from Central Ontario in 1993, the ladies team from Central Ontario in 2000, and the Hamilton ladies in 2003 and 2005. The 2005 team traveled to Edmonton and won gold for Ontario. Overall, in a thirteen-year span, Sandy represented Ontario nine times and won four gold medals. As well, in an annual tournament conducted by Jim Thorpe, another of tonight's honorees, at Park'n Bowl in St. Thomas, Sandy was victorious in 2004, as she partnered with Hamilton's Martin Talbot.
To this day, Sandy continues to be a very proud mother of her three children, namely Jason, Jeff, and Tori. As well, she has two wonderful grandchildren, a grandson, Braeden, who is ten and a two-year old granddaughter, Paige. Tonight's induction of Sandy Lyons gives Ontario 5 Pin Bowlers' Association our first family of Hall of Fame members. Congratulations to Audrey and Paul and now, joining her parents, Hall of Fame member, Sandy Lyons.
